Ghimbav is located in the immediate vicinity of Brașov (6 km), being a prosper and hospitable small town.
Ghimbav (German: Weidenbach, Hungarian: Vidombák) is an ancient Saxon settlement for more than seven centuries, being located in the central part of Romania, the Transylvania region, in the depression area of Brașov, in the western part of this depression, also known as the Bârsa Land.
If we look around, we have a beautiful view and the city seems to be closely watched over time by the mountain peaks of Postăvarul, Măgura Codlei, Cristianul Mare, and afar off dominated Bucegi, Piatra Craiului and Făgăraş Mountains. The town is crossed by the river Ghimbăşel, which gave the Romanian name of the locality.
Short history
The origin of the present settlement is related to the presence of the Teutonic Knights in Bârsa Land between 1211-1225 and the colonization of the Saxons in the 13th century. The majority population at that time was Saxons (field workers and later craftsmen).
The first documentary mention of Ghimbav (Widinbach) appears on April 25, 1342, in a donation act in favor of the Dominican monastery in Brașov (located on the current Mureșeni Street). The original document is kept in the archives of the Black Church in Braşov, being the oldest original document kept in Brașov.
The old coat of arms of the locality is a heart with three roses, each rose representing Faith, Love and Hope.
Local holidays, customs and traditions
Ghimbav days - is the feast of local customs and traditions, is a good time to reaffirm the city's historical past. The event takes place the first weekend after St. Peter and Paul, each year, the local stadium and ends with concerts and fireworks.
Festival dedicated to the holiday season - In December, the festival hosts Ghimbav carols "Oh, what wonderful news," the church "St. Apostles Peter and Paul "opportunity for locals to enter the atmosphere of winter holidays.
Carnivals organized by the Saxons - They are held in January and February. All carnivals have a theme and most successful masks are awarded.
