The New Orthodox Church in Ghimbav

St. Nicholas Church, documented in 1292 and mentioned in the Papal Bula from 1399, was built of stone from 1495 onwards with the contribution of the voivodes from ever the mountains (Vlad Calugar, Neagoe Basarab, Mihai Viteazul, Petru Cercel, Aron Vodă, Gheorghe Ştefan). The church's design includes Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, being in fact a synthesis of these styles under Byzantine cast. The Black Church is the parish church of the evangelical congregation of Augustan Confession in Brașov. Its nickname derives from the damage sustained in the Great Fire in 1689, which destroyed large parts of the city and blackened the church`s walls. Initially used only popularly, the name became official on the 20th century. The Black Church houses many remarkable works of art: the baptismal font (1472), a wall painting depicting the Holy Virgin (ca. 1476), Ottoman rugs (17th-18th c.) donated by the members of the congregation to their church, pews (18th-19th c.) attesting to the vast activity of the guilds, the monumental neogothic altar and 5 pipe organs. Two documentary exhibitions, on display in the western part of the church, offer a short history of the Black Church and informations about the life of Johannes Honterus, a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation in Transylvania. Ticket sales begin at 5.30 pm. During baptisms, weddings and other private events the opening times may be limited at short notice. The Romanian Orthodox Church Codlea, with the patronage of the 'Ascension of God", is the first Orthodox church in Codlea and was built in 1783. Until its foundation, the faithful gathered in a chapel. They also had a cemetery, as evidenced by a cross that dates back to 1726 and now stands in the courtyard of the church in front of the linden, which was planted in 1783.
