Until 1850, when the policies of Wallachia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire affected shepherding, Sacele was one of the richest villages in Transylvania. The ”mocani” went each year in transhumance, especially in Dobrogea, where they set up many settlements, reaching even Crimea.
The traditions of the ”mocan” and ”ceangăi” communities have left a highly valuable multicultural heritage. At Sacele there are 14 churches (7 orthodox Romanian and 7 Hungarian - Catholic and Protestant), all of them over 100 years old. The Orthodox churches, for example, combine the elements of Baroque architecture, influenced by the Viennese style, with those of Byzantine tradition.
Sacele is the third largest city in Romania, its area containing the following mountains: Piatra Mare, Ciucas (in part), Grohotiş (in part) and Neamţ (in part).
