About

The Black Church is the parish church of the evangelical congregation of Augustan Confession in Brașov. Its nickname derives from the damage sustained in the Great Fire in 1689, which destroyed large parts of the city and blackened the church`s walls. Initially used only popularly, the name became official on the 20th century.

The Black Church houses many remarkable works of art: the baptismal font (1472), a wall painting depicting the Holy Virgin (ca. 1476), Ottoman rugs (17th-18th c.) donated by the members of the congregation to their church, pews (18th-19th c.) attesting to the vast activity of the guilds, the monumental neogothic altar and 5 pipe organs. Two documentary exhibitions, on display in the western part of the church, offer a short history of the Black Church and informations about the life of Johannes Honterus, a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation in Transylvania.

The Evangelical Church of St. Matthias is a national class A monument (National Historical Monuments List: BV-II-a-A-11763). In 1394 the documents mention Stefan, as plebian of the church "St. Mathias" in Rasnov and Dean of Brasov. The only church of the Christian community of Râşnov Saxons, preserved to date, dates from the beginning of the 14th century. The Catholic Church worshiped Virgin Mary and, after the Reformation, became the evangelical Saxon prayer site. With the religious Reformation, the Saxons covered the frescoes of the church. But on the north side of the church choir an old painting was discovered, dated to 1500. In 1682, a new altar was installed in the evangelical church. In 1781 the 113-year old pipe organ was replaced with one made by the silesian Johann Frill. After the fires of 1587, 1623 and 1718, the place of worship was greatly damaged. The current appearance of the evangelical church dates from 1774-1775, when a new roof and walls of the church were built.Because in the fire of 1718 the three bells melted, in 1720 a new bell was cast. After 200 years, at the end of the First World War, two large bells, sanctified in 1927, were purchased from Apold. The earthquake of October 26th, 1802, caused great destruction of the Evangelical Church and its tower. The tower that was rebuilt until 1804 was 13 meters high and had a gilded globe and a star on top of it.

The oldest Orthodox church in Southeastern Transylvania is to be found in Rasnov: the Romanian Orthodox church dedicated to "Saint Nicholas". The monument was raised in several stages. As a result of the archaeological researches, it was concluded that the place was built in the 18th century. This architectural phase are to be noticed in the altar and small ship. In 1384 the restoration of the place was supported by the ruler of Wallachia, Radu I. The church was elongated and enlarged. From now on, it seems that the Gothic impression originates from the architecture of the Rasnov church. In 1773 the church was enlarged by the contribution of the Brasov merchants Ionita and Radu Boghici. The present form dates from the third decade of the 19th century. The Byzantine interior painting seems to have been made in the 17th century. Over the centuries, the church has received numerous donations from the rulers and boyars of Wallachia. The Old Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas is a national monument A (National Historic Monuments List BV-II-m-A-11762).

The Ethnography Museum of Brasov and its three branches, the Urban Civilization Museum of Brasov, the Săcele Ethnographic Museum and the "Gheorghe Cernea" Rupea Ethnographic Museum are waiting for you to travel with the stories of our exhibitions and to discover the activities we offer.    The Ethnography Museum in Brasov is dedicated to the civilization of the rural communities in the Bran area, Rupea, Ţara Oltului and Ţara Bârsei. Together with the two subsidiary museums, Sacele Ethnographic Museum and "Gheorghe Cernea" Rupea Ethnographic Museum, the institution aims to present various ethnographic aspects of the most representative areas in the county. In the central pavilion of Brasov there is a large permanent exhibition that includes, in a brief treatment, a common work for all ethnographic areas: the craft of the tissue and its functional application in the organization of the interior and in the popular costume.    The Urban Civilization Museum of Brasov is housed in an important monument of civil architecture, representative of the typology of public and private commercial spaces in Transylvanian towns, XVI-XIX.    The Museum of Urban Civilization of Brasov won the award of the Romanian Committee awarded for the year 2010, the year of the official opening of the Braşov Museum.    This award recognizes the remarkable modern valorisation of the historical monument restored, as well as the unique concept of the museums in Romania.    The Ethnographic Museum in Sacele operates in a historic monument building, documented in 1543, which served as a place for the gathering of dances for three centuries.    The permanent exhibition illustrates segments of life specific to the traditional civilization of the Carpathians (occupations, crafts, technical installations, a living space and traditional costumes). These aspects highlight the hypotheses of the multiculturality of the Sacele area by suggesting a common world to both the Moans and the Csangos. In the courtyard of the museum there is a hydraulic hammer hammer. Piua, who thickened thick woolen fabrics, was transferred from Târlungeni to the courtyard of the museum.    The urban-rural relationship, indirectly exposed in the exhibition, brings to the fore the phenomenon of acculturation, the settlements being strongly influenced by the urban way of life due to their location in the proximity of Brasov.    65 km from Brasov, on the road connecting Brasov to Sighisoara, in the center of Rupea, is the "Gheorghe Cernea" Ethnographic Museum. The museum, housed in a historic building from the 19th century. eighteenth century, recently renovated, evokes the rural world around Rupea, whose fair is a documentary attested in 1433.    The museum design aims to illustrate the main aspects that define the specificity of the Rupea ethnographic area: traditional fishing on Olt, pottery center in Drăuşeni, customs specific to the Saxon population in the area (Kronenfest), the Romanian wedding, the interior of the Saxon and Romanian houses and the flourishing trade in the Cohalm fair (Michael Falk's grocery store).    The museum can be named Gheorghe Cernea (1898-1965), one of the most outstanding personalities in the Rupea area, dedicated to Romanian folklore and ethnography.
